Definition

The Banff Centre is a multidisciplinary institute located in Banff, Alberta, Canada. It has a rich history of innovation and experimentation in digital arts and sciences. Some of the top scholars and technologists have attended retrats, worksops and residencies at the Centre. Over time, the Centre has grown and become less experimental. Today it is a more conservative institution of the arts. Early participants experienced a very different experience than those who might attend now, but there are still vestiges of radical politics, groundbreaking and untraditional thinking, and the substance experimentation of the past (needs some citations).

History

Digital media at The Banff Centre began with the establishment of the Banff New Media Institute (BNMI) in 1995. The BNMI developed to become an internationally respected arts production and research institute, with programs designed to support creative pluralism, different modes of inquiry, the production of new work, and the engagement of artists, producers, technologists, and researchers with the aesthetics and culture of new media.

The Banff Centre is supported by funding from the Government of Alberta, through Alberta Advanced Education and Technology, Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Arts programs are supported by funding from the Government of Canada through the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canada Arts Training Fund.
